Where Skies Are So Blue...

First. Thank you for the well wishes! I am doing much better today! I think that crazy Nor'easter had something to do with it as well as all that prep stress from Mother's Day.

Anyway, I was catching up at the office so I didn't have a ton of time to post today. BUT! On the way to home to let G-dog out for lunch, our wonderful radio station (WMMR) played a live in station version of "Sweet Home Alabama" from when Lynyrd Skynyrd was in the studio in 1993. It was the best version I have ever heard (and I have heard a few). It was about 70 degrees outside, blue, blue sky and a few thin clouds floating by. It was one of those drive times that you wish was taking you into the weekend.

Since it wasn't taking me to the weekend, it took me back to my North Carolina days and how I was a fake redneck for a summer when I dated a guy from East Carolina University. We went four-wheelin, yard-salin' and swam in people's man made ponds in inner tubes from tractors (fish tend to bite your butt when you are sitting in those by the way). I wore cut off camo pants often. My boyfriend's best friend referred to me as "Yankee" and asked me about yarmulkes because for some reason he thought they were associated with Catholics. Yes, it was a stretch for this prep from the northeast but I did have a good time that summer. It was like living in the song "Sweet Home Alabama."

Oh, I got rid of the guy when he decided planning a keg party with his friend was more important than talking to me on the phone. Priorities, people. Also, as an internship one summer (after we broke up) he drove the Oscar Wiener mobile...
to my home...
in Pennsylvania...
while we were on vacation.

Wow! All this from a live Lynard Skynard song! I like WMMR in the morning when Preston and Steve are on ... other than that, I tend to listen to my cds or 104.5 (sometimes, I'll see what's on 102.9).

Thanks for capturing your that way - I can picture it exactly.

I would have broke up with him, too!! HELLLOOOOO....talking on the phone is VERY important. super funny!

"Sweet Home Alabama" is the song that plays when my cell rings... man I love that song. Turnin' it up with the windows down... perfect.

I think they may be more to the story about this old boyfriend...I'll be waiting...

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! @ Weiner Mobile...

And I HEART Sweet Home Albama...it's on the short list of songs Boyfriend & his friends always play on the jukebox thingy at the bar (along with some Journey and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band). Rock on!

Glad you're feeling better!

One of my all time favorite songs... of a list of about 100... :-) I love music... it can completely shape the mood and make a good experience (like getting away from work albeit for a short time) seem all the better.

Who knew you had a redneck side! Those inner tubes are horsefly traps too... we'd get so bitten up by them we'd look like we had chickenpox.

Lynard Skynard ROCKS
Hope you are feeling better, me on the other hand beg for a flu so that I don't have to get out of bed and admit that I have teenagers

OMG! I think we were all falling for some Southern guy when that song was hot. We went to see Lynard Synnard a couple of years ago and were shocked at what an old fart he is. Like way more than us, lol. Do yourself a favor and remember him as he was. The reality is just too much to comprehend, lol.

Hi there - large amounts of this post sailed right past me but I really enjoyed it!

Good shout on the tune!

How many American states have you visited, Scargosun? You seem to reference quite a few in your Blog. I have been to California and that's it but I want to go to Montana (it's a star trek thing). I only know Montana is at the top near Canada because I just looked it up.

Glad you are feeling better!

Alright, I can't believe I know someone (not that I really know you) who knows someone that actually drove a wiener mobile.

I still have my Oscar Meyer Weiner Whistle! I heard because of the price of gas the Wiener Mobile is going to be more the size of a Cocktail Weiner ... any truth to that rumor? Use your contacts, I am counting on you!

I love those kinds of days. Roll down the windows in the car, crank up the stereo and just let all your cares fly away as you sing at the top of your lungs. Lookie-loos be damned!

First things first, is Queen Mommy a D.Catch girl too?

Secondly, I can't believe that you gave up the chance to be on My Big Redneck Wedding to move to PA. You could have gone bog hopping in the weiner mobile!?!

What a great, descriptive story!
The weiner-mobile...wow, I've never seen it, but I can assure you that any guy driving one might not have made my top 10. You know your parents would be so happy to see him pull up. Can you imagine saying "yep, that's the guy that I'm going to spend the rest of my life with...yep, that one. No, really, uh-huh the guy driving a weiner. Really." Fits of laughter erupt. And you're so right about fish being attracted to your booty in ponds. What exactly makes it look like food?

lol that is so funny about the weiner mobile, yeah major points would have been lost with that

I don't know...I would seriously consider keeping a man driving the weinermobile. Have you seen how long that weiner(mobile) is?

Debbie said...

That is true love! And what is it with the weiner mobile and Pennsylvania? I went to Penn State and in the summertime I think two of my friends drove one of those. Good thing you got rid of him...or you'd be sportin a shemullet eating hot dogs the rest of your life;)

WMMR lost me when they dumped their mid-morning show... And hey, have you heard the new 'Kid Rock' song? It's got strains of Skynard and makes me think of the south... Great tune, though the only south in me is 'Southern California'

I'd love to take a ride in the weinermobile!!

Love that song, and who wouldn't love a Fake Redneck Summer?

Love Lynard Skynard. You should try living in the country fulltime. It's fun but it can get old.

Sheri said...

Hey, I AM a Southern Girl, and you're right, SHA is THE song.

I heard Kid Rock perform his "All Summer Long" live the first time I heard it, and it is my 2008 summer anthem. . . perfect for those memory trips!

Lula! said...

I'd have called you a Yankee, too. In the lovingest way possible. Because a true southerner gets a kick out of a true yankee. Especially one that digs southern rock!

Great post SITS sista!!!! Gott love fake rednecks!!!

It's amazing how a song can immediately transport you to a certain time and place. That summer of your fake redneckism (that's a word right?) sounds awesome! I'm a Texas gal, so that all sounds familiar to me. :o)

Fun post!! And, the weiner mobile. hehe I've seen that bad boy rollin' around before.

Congrats on being the SITS featured blog.

I loooove Sweet Home Alabama.

Love the story about the Oscar Weiner mobile .... that guy had a sense of humour or something :-)

Serves him right... a weiner mobile...

SITS sistah here - I once swore I would never marry a man who didn't have "Sweet Home Alabama" in his CD collection. Now I'm thinking a better vow would be to never marry someone who DOES drive a Weiner Mobile...

Isn't it amazing how music can transport you back in time?

Sunshine said...

I flipping love how songs do that...totally take us somewhere to someone, some memory. Or some very vivid daydream (ahem)...where am I?

Anyhoo...Oscar Meyer Weiner mobile--eh? WOW.

Jennifer P. said...

What?!--You COULD have married the Oscar Meyer wiener truck driver and lived happily ever after.....and didn't ;)?!

I think that's great that a song could flood you with such memories. Music is a powerful thing.

So funny!
My dad is a redneck from Missouri and my brother now lives in Alabama. I was raised in WA but laughed all the way through!

Alison said...

How could you resist the Oscar Weiner mobile? That's the key to every girl's heart.

Acrimony said...

Ya know, as a Jew, I always wonder why only the higher up Catholic clergy wear yarmulkes. So, yes, you must blog about that and clear it up for us confused Jews once and for all!

Oh and Sweet Home Alabama is awesome.

Tami said...

Oh, my hubby loves that song!

Driving the weinermobile - ROFL!

Debz said...

SHUT.UP.! The weiner mobile? Really? That is sooooo funny. I dont know ... he sounds like a keeper to me (heh)

Gina said...

Sounds like a real keeper!! Glad you didn't!!!! hahaha!!!
That's kinda how I grew up, however- as a southern girl in the boondocks.

Anonymous said...

Whoa...I don't know if I would have the strength to resist the Weinermobile! That is classic!

Tricia said...

I love "Sweet Home Alabama" and a completely out-of-character summer sounds wonderfully whimsical, even the wanna be a redneck kind.

visiting via sits - great post! I love that song and I can totally imagine driving to it with the windows down and the music blaring! Great story too about your red-neck fling!

Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks my world! I have fond memories of that song from karaoke night... oh good times!

Love the song. Love the movie more- partly because I recognise some places from my 4 short years in GEORGIA.

OVer from SITS. LOVE that song!

I was raised by rednecks in Alaska of all places. no self respecting redneck would value communication over kegger plannin' - but then that's why I went out of my way to avoid marrying a redneck.

on the other hand, any one of us would have jumped at the chance to drive around in the weiner-mobile

Cutoff camo. Now that's a mental image. The tractor tires I of course totally get, but the camo keeps me giggling!

I had a redneck boyfriend once. Coming from middle-Georgia, I guess it really shouldn't be a shock. I do remember the muddin'.
